In 2003 I started in the Executive MBA program at Boston
University. I also was laid off from Tektronix and in the
middle of a major rennovation of our house. Despite all this
I was able to get some of my best training in and ran a
personal best at Boston with a 2:49 marathon. After being
laid off for 9 months I got a job in the fall of 2003. It
was extremely difficult to manage running, school and work.
In early 2004 I got a minor neck injury that forced me to
stop running for a few weeks. The neck injury went away
quickly but it put me into a rut that lasted until I
completed the MBA program in May. I also put on 25 pounds
during the last 5 months of the program. I had an extremely
difficult time getting back into shape. I did not get
serious until 2006 when my Dr told my cholesterol was high
and that I should get back into racing shape. |
| The 1990s |
After college I got married and moved to Lowell where I
joined the Greater Lowell Road Runners. My running improved
as I started to run and do track workouts with some of the
faster members of the club. I had two big setbacks during
the 90's that were related to my back. The first was in the
spring of 1993 (April 17 just before Boston) and the second
time was in the fall of 1998. The second time I threw out my
back I ended up having surgery. I recovered from the surgery
and have not had problems since. |
1982 - 1987
College |
I ran through the summer after my senior year of high
school but stopped during the first few months I was in
college. I gained a few pound and was not motivated to run.
I tried to run a campus race during a fall Homecoming event
and painfully learned how out of shape I was. I started to
run again on my own but never joined the track or cross
country team. I only found out years later that I could have
trained with them even if I was not quite fast enough to
compete for them. During my senior year I started to run
with Walter Kuklinski, one of my professors. He encouraged
me to train for my first marathon and helped me get over my
fear of higher mileage. |
1978 - 1982
High School |
I started running on my own in December 1978 during my
freshmen year of high school. I joined the outdoor track
team in the spring of 1979 and continued to run track &
cross country though my senior year of high school. I ran my
first road race during the summer between my freshmen and
sophomore year. I also joined the Central Mass Striders. |
