While working on my MBA in 2004 we had a residence week devoted
to personal and professional development. Everyone in the Executive
MBA program was successful and had similar stories of progressive
career advancement. Another common theme voiced by folks was the
repeated struggles they had balancing their personal and
professional lives. Many students shared that while they were fairly
happy with what they had achieved in the workplace they were
disappointed at not
having fulfilled personal goals in life. One of my disappointments
was that I had never learned to play an instrument and that I had
always wanted to know how to play the piano. I made a commitment to
myself that week that upon completing my MBA that I would learn to
play.
I followed thru after graduation and started taking lessons from
the same teacher that my children go to. My daughters and I are
taught by Karen Leonard. She is the Artistic Director of the
Merrimack Valley Ringers, a
hand bell ensemble in the Merrimack Valley that has performed all
over New England.
Although I waited until later in life to act on my passion for
music my older brother,
Roland, found music early in life by picking
up the guitar. He has composed many song and has played in several
band.
I
have also been teaching myself music theory as well. In an effort to
measure my progress I have been taking exams thru the
National Music
Certificate Program. I have passed the Intermediate Rudiments exam
and am studying to complete the Advanced Rudiments exam. Following
these I hope to complete the series of Harmony and Analysis exams.
